Economic Migration has always been a very tricky issue whether in the West or in the rest of the world. In the 1950s, Europe and America encouraged mass immigration for the cheap and yet talented workforce it represented. However, today, with a sovereign debt crisis that is threatening even the world’s giants, voters are scared of the overflow of overseas workers that are “stealing” jobs. Politicians ask to see fewer immigrants, and yet businesses still want more. Who is right? Is limiting migration one of the solutions for a stagnating economy or should economists have their way? And how does this debate affect countries that are losing a viable workforce to immigration? Do they benefit for the higher income their citizens generate elsewhere, or are they loosing too much?
