Since the passing of the Magna Carta in 1215, countless documents have been produced proclaiming basic rights that are sacrosanct. However, how universally applicable are they? Most of us studying at Warwick University are blessed with relatively safe, protected lives. However, for the millions living in Darfur or the few hundreds who are detained in the Guantanamo Naval Base prison, human rights is but an abstract notion, distant from reality. In the 'Rhetoric of Rights' series of talks, One World Forum discusses the different contemporary legal positions taken by countries around the world, with respect to human rights and humanitarian issues, putting into question its very notion of inviolability.
