El Violin
A cinematic gem from Mexico, this film follows the story of an ageing musician who fiddles his way towards the country's peasant revolts of the 1970s. Don Plutarco, together with his son Genaro and grandson Lucio, scrape a living as travelling musicians, and gather resources for the peasant revolt by night. But they return home only to find their village captured by military officials. With his son preparing for resistance, Plutarco ventures into the village to recover hidden ammunition, where he must appease a sinister squad captain with his music. This stark drama features a brilliant performance by Don Angel Taviro, and is an elegant debut from director Francisco Vargas.
